greentip #1: don't shrug the mug.

It's safe to assume that coffee is apart the working/studying day. It takes energy and water to produce, transport and dispose of a plastic, paper or polystyrene cup - your own ceramic mug is much more energy efficient [even taking into account the water needed to wash it]. I hear a mug could be used about 3000 times [unless you're butterfingers] - so that's 30 times less solid waste and 60 times less air pollution than using 3000 disposable cups. I'm sure most coffee bars [like my good friends here] would be happy to brew one up in your own favourite mug - it also saves them money.

less energy use.
lower carbon emissions.
less waste.

do it.

  1. It's been very intersting to see that here in South Africa some people are working to cut down on the amount of plastic bottles being thrown away. There's a company called Oasis water, and if you take in an empty bottle they'll fill it with clean water for less 1/3 what you'd pay for a bottle in the shops, all to cut down on junk. It's pretty cool. On the other hand the locals are a lot of the locals are too poor to care, they can't afford bottled water and just throw their rubbish right out the window onto the road.

  2. ECU has a travel mug that you get discount for filling up at their cafes. I have one and now I look like a nerd. I tell myself I'm taking one for the environment.
